The Second Annual $5 Challenge
over at

1) The challenge was to create a new spring decor item for your home
2) It had to be purchased from a dollar store
3) $5.00 was the price limit
4) You could use paint, glue, fabric, paper and tools if you already had them on hand

We were in great need of a calendar in the kitchen, but I knew I did not want a big bulky one.

So while at Dollar Tree shopping for Valentine goodies I found this :

miniature cork board
I was not sure what I was going to do with it but for $1.00 I had to have it!

I found this and did the project before the announcement of the challenge, everything happens for a reason!

I sanded down the wood trim with some left over sand paper

I had bought these for another project and had not used them yet, I thought they would dress up the board!
They were only $1.99, so even if I had to purchase them to stay within the $5 budget
I would have been able to!
You could also choose not to hot glue them on if you want a look more contemporary

I them painted the wood frame black, with Apple brand paint (I always keep this on hand) with a cheap-o sponge brush (I buy these in bulk)!

When it had dried, I used the sand paper to rough up the edged, to give it a little personality

I then painted the decorative pieces with Apple brand paint in lime green, when the green had had time to dry I brushed over it with black with a sponge brush as well!

I glued the pieces on with hot glue, a girls best friend!!!!

I wanted my calendar to go on the fridge so I dug through the junk drawer and found 4 magnets and hot glued them on!

I had initially wanted to use some black and white Damask wrapping paper left over from Christmas to cover the cork but was afraid that it would be a little difficult to cut to size , so after thinking for a second I decided that I would go through a whole drawer full of scrap book paper that I never use and see if I could find something black and white.

I came up with black and white polka dot, which I was not crazy about at first but I know it had to work.
I am sure that when I purchased this paper about 3 years ago it did not cost more than .25 cents!

All I did was cut the paper just a tiny bit bigger than the cork part and slipped it under the wood frame!

Now for a calendar , I looked at dollar stores and could not find a cheap small calendar that I could take apart so I went online an found a Word version, changed the font, printed to size and then punched two holes in the top so I could run a piece of ribbon through it.

I had planned on using some burlap ribbon my Mom had given me
for Christmas but it looked too bulky, so I looked around
and found a great lime green piece of ribbon that came on a bag
from Coldwater Creek, it was perfect and FREE!

I then cut a piece of card board (from a cereal box I was throwing away)
to use as backing for the paper calendar.
Stabled it and the calendar to the cork and boom it was done!

When I saw that Lindsay was going to have a $5 challenge I knew I had to enter, this would also be perfect to hang on a metal file cabinet in the office or leave off the magnet and place in an easel on a desk!

So over at Love from Texas

Yes I know it is Tuesday but, I'm going to join in late!

This week we are taking a look into the great unknown our purses!

Is it a problem if my boss often ask me if I'm planning on staying the night at the office
because of all a haul around, HA!

I really like the size of my purse it holds a lot without looking like a Nana purse!

All of this was in that!

The inside, I know it's nasty!

There are a few things that I HAVE to have in my purse
1. Wallet-for obvious reasons
2. Phone
3.Small make-up bag
( contains chapstick, lip liner, lip stick, gloss, at least 2 tubes of mascara)
4. Headache Meds
(Excedrin and RX)
5. Tape Measure
(my MIL got this one for my for Christmas, it has a key ring on it so it goes on the key holder I NEVER use)
6. Nose Spray

It's always nice to have
antibacterial stuff

If I leave the house I always take my pink make-up bag even though I rarely carry it in my purse

This is my wonderful Kate Landrey wreistlet, I heart this thing so much. It is the perfect size !

On Monday I put all my errands on a sticky note and stick it to the back of my wallet!

I hope I am not the only one who's purse becomes a little out of hand!

This is what happens when you want to go to bed at 7pm on a Sunday night!

This is what happens when you take all of 5 min. on Monday morning

I have to say it was sooooooooo worth going to bed early, leaving the mess, shutting off my OCD, and taking time to do it first thing this morning! Sometimes we all need a break!

So Fresh, So Clean!

The Thrify Decor Chick is hosting a "So Fresh So Clean Party"

Not only do I absolutely admire Thrifty Decor Chick and her sense of style, I

pick up wonderful tips from her and her followers!

Since we hosted my husband family for Christmas in the middle of December my house has I have been lacking a schedule. I'm slowly getting back in the groove of my daily "must do's" to prevent it from looking like a war zone. Last week was an all time low, clothes everywhere; bed room, bath room, outside the laundry room! Our house is still on the market, however I was very thankful last week we did not have any lookers, I would have been SO embarrassed! So when I am on my toes and remembering my 2010 motto this is what I do every day!

1. Our bed must be made, everyday, no matter what.

I have "let go" a little and have allowed (sounds bad I know) to start doing this, it is not perfect and he does not make sure the fabric on the throw pillows is going the same way or that our monogrammed pillow is not up-side down, or that the sheet is not showing or even GASP that the bed skirt is straight, however it has been one thing I have not had to worry about here lately.

It makes me feel good when everything is up off the floor!

2. No dishes in the sink! If I do not have time to unload the dishes from the dishwasher I put my coffee cup in my cereal bowl in the small side of the sink. The BIG side must be clean at all times!!!

3. Wipe off the counter in the kitchen

I love the way this smells and does a great job of just cleaning up every couple of days,

I still use 409 to disinfect!

I also love Mr. Clean Erasers to clean doors and light switch plates!

4. Dirty clothes in the hamper, not on the floor in the bath room or heaven forbid in the sunken tub

(that is me) and absolutely not on top of the hamper, if you are going to take the time and effort to walk over for Pete's sake take the wicker lid off and dump them inside, it’s not heavy I saw you pick it up once I'm sure you can do it again (Chris)! Whew that one got me fired up!!!

5. Run and un-load the dishwasher if needed

6. Go through mail and throw away the junk!

I'm on the hunt for some cute baskets to help eliminate the clutter of the "keep" mail until I can get to it

Every few days I attempt to organize my bills in my folder.

7. Re-fill the Brita water pitcher am & pm, Chris is much better at remembering this that I am!

The best $31 we ever spent!

I need to add the following to my dailey routine
*put all my "getting ready" stuff away in the morning
*clean my car out
*do a light chore
* Prepare coffee the night before, it will eliminat clean up in the morning

1. Wash sheets and towels

(sometime I will do sheets every other week, especially if Chris has been traveling a lot)

2. ALL laundry!

I am awful about waiting until Sunday afternoon to do this and by 8 pm I do not want to put it up!

I use Dreft, I know it is pricy but you cannot beat the smell plus it really seems to help if you have any type of skin reaction to regular detergent! I do not use fabric softener so I feel like I probably spend the same as most people

4. Clean off all the catch all that accumulates in the kitchen

5. Empty all containers, throw away everything that only has one or two pumps left, and put new soap in showers if needed. This just really helps out in the rush of the morning and gets all the extra bulk out of the way in the trash!

6. I look at the weather and pick out what I'm going to wear for the next week

and put it at the front of the closet. That way I can iron what I need.

I know very elementary but it has helped!

7. Trash day in on Monday (which is great!) and Chris does it for the most part.

I do a lot more on a weekly basis but I assume most of you do the same!
Happy Cleaning!

HaPpY nEw YeAr.... A LiTtLe LaTe!

I can not believe it has been over 1 month since my last post! Wow, a lot has happened since I last posted however I will not take the time to do a re-cap and just move on into the New Year.

Since I seem to be working a little behind these days. I will post my New Year's Goals.

My 2010 Motto
Discipline is remembering what you want
david cambell

I saw this phrase over at Clover Lane, and it has been stuck in my head ever since. It applies to everyone no matter your age, social standing, race, or gender no matter what your goal is. I claim this phrase and will repeat it in my head every day, every time I start to veer of course!
I also seem to pick a theme or color that I stick with for a while, in the near past it has been avocado green, however I feel more drawn to dark purple these days, so I am sure it will be my 2010 color, do not worry RED you will always be my favorite, forever and always not matter what!

1. As always, lose weight and be healthier inside and out
2.Work on having a stronger relationship with my husband
3.Find a church
4.Grow my hair out and keep it healthy
5.This kind of falls under #1, but become more physically fit
6.Be more open minded and flexible (being in control is huge for me)
7. Stay on budget and SAVE
8.Blogging and everything that goes with it!
9. Be a better "parent" to our dog Sadie (there is a whole issue behind this)
10.Make 2010 a year to remember, I have been out of high school 10 years! Ouch! I need to remember what my goals were in 2000, it was a big year for me and I went through a lot of changes and experiences.

I am sure these "goals" are not to far off to any of most of yours, they are pretty generic. I look forward to doing a blog about each of these and how I am coming along throughout the year. Being the OCD control freak I am I have a "sub list" that goes with these. Maybe I should start a binder, see there I go again the whole control thing!
What are your goals for 2010? How do you hold yourself accountable?
